OPERATIONAL CONVERSION UNIT. NO.VI SQDN. ROYAL VIRTUAL AIR FORCE

SQUADRON HISTORY

Despite its number designation, No. VI OCU Squadron is the founder squadron of the Royal Virtual Air Force. The squadron was virtually formed in 1913, which equates to an actual date of 1997, largely due to the vigorous lobbying of the Ministry of Defence by then Squadron Leaders R.P. Grant and Secret Squirrel. They persuaded the Ministry that a new branch of the RAF should be formed that used the most recent advancements in computer technology to train and convert pilots from the horse and cart to the biplane. This marked the birth of No. VI Squadron, Operational Conversion Unit and of the greater organization of the Royal Virtual Air Force.

The squadron has survived all of the sweeping changes in the RVAF to remain the primary OCU of the Force, and continues to train and fly many different types of aircraft in many theatres of operations. One of the most remarkable facts of this history has been that R.P.Grant and Secret Squirrel, now well past one hundred years old (late twenties) have not chosen to move on from No.VI squadron, but remain as Commanding Officers at RVAF Sawston and RVAF Nut House respectively.

In June 1997, Rachel L. Grant donated an aircraft to No. VI Squadron. This plane was an Hornet FGR (MRCS) Mk.3 designated GE7069 'R'. Hopefully, this airplane is the first in a long line of planes that will carry the 'R' letter code, and in honour of Rachel Grant, all such planes will be named "Rachel's Rattle".
