At McDonnell Douglas, St. Louis, Missouri the new
F/A- 18E (Super Hornet)
was introduced.


Here are some details:
  • a new F414- GE- 400 engine from General Electrics with 97.9 kN thrust (+ 35% in comparison to Hornet C/D)
  • 33% more inboard fuel than the Hornet C/D, resulting in a max. mission time of 2h 15 min.
  • length + 0.86m
  • wing area + 25%, rudder area + 54%
  • the Hughes APG-73 radar remains, but with better touch- on- screens
  • avionics 90% identical with Hornet C/D
  • mass (empty) increased to 13,864 kg
  • new, even more robust gear, now enabling carrier landings without jettison loadout
  • chaff and flares amount increased to 120
  • 30% fewer parts then Hornet C/D
  • constructed totally with a solid- model- calculating- computer system
  • Sea tests are scheduled for January 1997
  • Development costs US$ 4.88 million.
  • About 27,000 employees in 3,200 companies participated in the project
