So I like to keep tabs on <a href=\"http:\/\/bibliodyssey.blogspot.com\/2008\/08\/dogs-of-war.html\">BibliOdyssey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Hark! Hark! The Dogs Do Bark! 1914\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/85009674@N00\/2722416468\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3281\/2722416468_1aebcdebb2.jpg\" alt=\"Hark! Hark! The Dogs Do Bark! 1914\" width=\"500\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I sent the link to CK, giggling at the phrase<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Holland is impolitely interrupted during breakfast as a stray bomb lands in his cup of cocoa.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>CK writes back that his<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>great uncle was one of four Dutch soldiers to be injured during WWI. He was in an observation post when the Germans &#8216;accidentally&#8217; lobbed in some a small shell. The explosion set fire to their store of cooking oil and he was a bit burned trying to fight the fire.<\/p>\n<p>Good enough for him to claim a war pension for the rest of his life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As far as I can tell, just about every male member of CK&#8217;s extended family did something in one of the two major unpleasantnesses in Europe last century, from sinking U-Boats single-handedly to rescuing 45,000 Polish refugees using only a rubber dinghy and a bag of flour.<\/p>\n<p>Amazing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I \u2014 like I suspect just about every civilized person on the planet \u2014 have a thing about old maps and books.
