Words don't come easily

16:46 Book burning is a crime against humanity. I'll make an exception for Jubilate Hymns.

Fwoooosh no more

16:06 Paul MacKenzie has taken some excellent photos of the last flight of the Concorde as she came home to Filton. Lovely stuff. Sad to see her retired.

Drug-free

13:14 In all the excitement, you may have missed this little gem. No players tested positive for banned substances. Well done lads, you did us proud. (Must resist making sarky comments about soccer).

Sweet Chariot

11:31 Give that man an OBE! What a way to win the RWC - what sweet, poetic justice. I'm quite exhausted now.

Argh!

11:41 I want to go . . . but I have no one to take me :(

Who's yer daddy!

11:41 Storrrrrrrrrrrrrryyy!!

For me, that was the most important match of the tournament, and we stuffed it to 'em. You'll excuse a little exultation; Up yours, Froggies!

<waves>

10:16 Finally got this place upgraded to Portland's enhanced package. Should mean less downtime, and the various scripts and stuff I've got knocking around should be working again. And the new nameservers have been propagated, which is nice. Have a good weekend.

The Gimp, again

14:55 El Reg has a take on this from a technical perspective. Biometrics. Essentially there are two points; (i) on a .eu-wide scale the system is only as good as the weakest link, and (ii) biometrics will mean that fake IDs will have even greater validity . . .

What bugs me is that we're going to have to pay for this privilege. It's another tax - those of us who drive and who travel are going to have to pay more to go about our ordinary business - even when we're not driving and flying. I've set it before, I'll say it again; I didn't vote for these buggers.

Land of the Free

13:58 Oh, and while we're thinking about freedom, what the hell is this all about? I guess in future that ID cards will be required before you're allowed to travel, to make it easier to repress our democratic responsibilities. Yeah, you read that right - we do not have a right to demonstrate; as a democracy it is our fscking responsibility to demonstrate.

The Gimp

13:53 It's rather ironic that on the day we remember the people who died in war, and give thanks for those who died to preserve our freedom (the two sets intersect, but are not completely overlapping) that The Gimp reveals his latest plan for Airstrip OnePolice State Britain. Oh, and look at this:

But last week, his Lib Dem opposite number, Mark Oaten, said there had been "major flaws" in a Home Office consultation exercise.
He suggested that 5,000 unfavourable responses had been excluded because officials "decided to ignore" them as they had been submitted through an anti-ID card website.
Mr Oaten said the Home Office claimed they received only 2,000 responses to the consultation when in fact there had been more than 7,000.

In my line of ork, there's a word for that. We call it 'fraud'.

Bring back Maggie.

19:53 Thanks to PD for bringing this Google mirror to our attention. Yeah, now go back and try it . . .

Culture

09:49 Looking for Sassoon's The General earlier (I thought it was appropriate, somehow), and found this lovely poetry site. By no means complete, but has some real gems. I haven't yet had the opportunity to go up and trawl further around on the site.
